Portrait Drawing for Beginners - 6 Week Course

Join our 6-week portrait drawing course led by experienced professional artist and educator Ashley Saeed. Designed for complete beginners and those looking to build upon existing skills, this course blends theory, practical knowledge, and a bit of art history in a warm and approachable environment. Throughout this course you will have the opportunity to learn how to draw your own family members, friends and self portraits. 

Course Highlights:

Learn practical skills and simple steps for drawing faces and portraits.

All materials provided, including a hard-bound sketchbook to take home.

No experience necessary, suitable for all skill levels.

Course Details:

Dates: Saturdays, from October 5th

Time: 5 pm - 7 pm

Course Outline:

Week 1: Introduction to graphite, drawing vocabulary, and exploratory sketches. Contour and gesture exercises to encourage expressive drawing.

Week 2: Gesture exercises, constructing faces using the Loomis method, and basic anatomy observation.

Week 3: Introduction to charcoal, warm-up gestures, and exploring facial planes and values.

Week 4: Charcoal gestures, exploratory sketches, and creating a long 4-value portrait drawing.

Week 5: Continued charcoal practice with a focus on long, detailed portraits.

Week 6: Final portrait projects and continuation of techniques learned.

About the Instructor: Ashley Saeed

Ashley Saeed studied fine art and history, developing a deep understanding of both traditional and contemporary art techniques. Her work is characterized by a gestural, expressive style that explores line, realism, and the figurative form. Known for her warm and approachable teaching style, Ashley creates a supportive and engaging learning environment. She is passionate about helping students discover their own artistic voice, regardless of their experience level. Her classes blend practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and a touch of art history to ensure a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience.

What to bring

Please feel free to bring along photographs or prints of anyone you would like to draw a portrait of. We will also have reference images available. 

We provide aprons however please wear smocks that you don't mind getting a little paint on!
