Where: 284 Wingrove St, Fairfield VIC
Class fee: $140
- “A relaxed and relaxing class. Junko is an inspiring teacher, genuinely curious and engaged. Would recommend this class to anyone interested in this beautiful art form."
This workshop is for students who have attended a workshop or short course with Junko previously, as she will be building upon the foundational skills learned in beginners' classes.
Sumi-e is the ancient art of Japanese brush painting, where traditionally, paintings feature subjects from nature, such as flowers and birds.
There is much more to creating an image during the process of Japanese ink painting; it is also a meditative practice.
The relaxing experience of Sumi-e painting brings a sense of peace and harmony to the artist, and finished artworks are created to arouse the same sense of joy and tranquillity in the viewer.
Junko will bring many models for the student to choose from and each student will work on one or two subjects individually.
At the end of the class, return home with your own painting, as well newfound skills and confidence!
About Junko Azukawa
Junko Azukawa grew up in Toyama, Japan at the base of the central Japanese Alps, a region famous for the natural beauty of its landscape.
She started learning traditional Japanese calligraphy, Shodo, at the age of five and has experienced the vast possibilities that calligraphy and Japanese ink painting, Sumi-e, can express with just simple monochrome brush marks.
Junko’s calligraphy teacher Shiro Aoyagi, the founder of the Hokuriku Shodo Academy and one of Japan’s most respected calligraphy masters, demonstrated his artwork at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia in 2008 and his work is now represented in the NGV’s collection.
Since becoming a resident of Melbourne, Australia in 2005, Junko has exhibited her artwork at a number of galleries, taught Japanese calligraphy and painting to children and adults at numerous schools and organisations and collaborated with other creative people such as musicians, filmmakers, dancers, animators and writers. One of her artworks "Bamboo Grove and the Dragonfly" is also now in the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection. In 2011 Junko started to use her art form with mental illness patients as a form of therapy with great compassion. She is also sought after in commercial design work for her skilful brushwork from bottle labels and logos to restaurant murals. She has had her illustrations published in the novel; NAVIGATIO authored by Australian writer Patrick Holland in 2014.
Junko is committed to sharing her Japanese culture in Australia. Together with a lifelong study of traditional calligraphy and ink painting, Junko has found peace and appreciation deep within and loves sharing with her audience the intimate relationship between mother nature including animals and human nature through her brush.

I loved the venue. It was large, bright and easily accessible from my home.
All the materials were provided and I was especially pleased when Junko allowed us to use the red ink as well as the black. A new experience!
The afternoon was definitely good value for money. I learnt a few different techniques such as painting mountains and birds.
Thank you Junko, for a terrific experience and I’m definitely planning on attending another class in the future."
"A relaxed but productive small class, with lots of freedom to explore different subjects, and very helpful ideas and tips from Junko. Materials were excellent quality as usual, including the snacks! and the new studio is very inviting. Will be back next time!"
