Traditional Japanese calligraphy and Sumie painting artists are able to paint expressive poetry and vivid scenes of nature using only the various tones of black Sumi ink and brush techniques.
In this Melbourne workshop, you will learn to make and use different Sumi-e ink tones and brush techniques to create traditional Japanese ink paintings on rice paper.
During the workshop, you will:
Learn how to make ink and use materials
Understand ink tone, basic brush strokes and rhythm
Understand composition techniques used in traditional Japanese painting
Learn how to be creative in the moment
Experience a meditative process in the art
This workshop is perfect for beginners who are ready to dip their toes into the fine art of Japanese Ink painting! You will leave this unique workshop with a range of painting skills and your own creations from the day.

"My partner and I loved this class. The timeframe was perfect (not too long or too short), Junko was very knowledgeable and a great teacher, the space was perfect, we learnt how to grind our own ink, different brush strokes, traditional composition and gradient layering. We purchased the ink stick and grinding stone and Japanese paper to continue playing at home :) Thanks Junko ありがとうございます"
"Junko is such a beautiful down to earth artist. I’m not very artistic and she made me feel so comfortable and confident in class. I can’t wait to have another art class with her. The art tools were provided and the location was perfect. Highly recommend :)"

"Junko was a great teacher who shared her significant knowledge of Japanese ink painting with patience and enthusiasm. The class provided a opportunity to practice a mindful art form in a comfortable space and was perfect for me, who had never done this kind of art before. Junko uses authentic imported Japanese brushes, ink and paper to get the full experience. Highly recommend this class and Gloworm Studios!"

About Junko Azukawa
Junko Azukawa grew up in Toyama, Japan at the base of the central Japanese Alps, a region famous for the natural beauty of its landscape.
She started learning traditional Japanese calligraphy, Shodo, at the age of five and has experienced the vast possibilities that calligraphy and Japanese ink painting, Sumi-e, can express with just simple monochrome brush marks.
Junko’s calligraphy teacher Shiro Aoyagi, the founder of the Hokuriku Shodo Academy and one of Japan’s most respected calligraphy masters, demonstrated his artwork at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia in 2008 and his work is now represented in the NGV’s collection.
Since becoming a resident of Melbourne, Australia in 2005, Junko has exhibited her artwork at a number of galleries, taught Japanese calligraphy and painting to children and adults at numerous schools and organisations and collaborated with other creative people such as musicians, filmmakers, dancers, animators and writers. One of her artworks "Bamboo Grove and the Dragonfly" is also now in the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection. In 2011 Junko started to use her art form with mental illness patients as a form of therapy with great compassion. She is also sought after in commercial design work for her skilful brushwork from bottle labels and logos to restaurant murals. She has had her illustrations published in the novel; NAVIGATIO authored by Australian writer Patrick Holland in 2014.
Junko is committed to sharing her Japanese culture in Australia. Together with a lifelong study of traditional calligraphy and ink painting, Junko has found peace and appreciation deep within and loves sharing with her audience the intimate relationship between mother nature including animals and human nature through her brush.
